UAE Deploys Search and Rescue Team to Assist Myanmar Earthquake Victims
The aid initiative comes after a devastating earthquake has claimed around 2,000 lives in Myanmar, prompting swift international support.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has dispatched a search and rescue team to Myanmar in response to the catastrophic earthquake that struck the region, resulting in the loss of approximately 2,000 lives.
This urgent mission includes personnel from Abu Dhabi Police, the National Guard, and the Joint Operations Command, following directives from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
Rescue operations are currently underway in Myanmar as authorities and volunteers work to locate individuals who remain trapped in the rubble, three days following the disaster.
The urgency of the situation has led to intensified efforts to find survivors amid widespread destruction.
The UAE's initiative is part of its broader commitment to provide humanitarian assistance and relief to communities affected by natural disasters across the globe.
In recent years, the UAE has responded to numerous crises, demonstrating its dedication to international humanitarian efforts.
Historically, the UAE has played a significant role in providing aid during various emergencies.
Following Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013, the UAE delivered a notable humanitarian aid package, including food, water, and medical supplies, amounting to $10 million.
Moreover, after the earthquake in Nepal in 2025, the UAE provided extensive emergency assistance, including financial aid, medical resources, and temporary shelter for the affected population.
In early 2023, devastating earthquakes hit Turkey and Syria, where at least 4,000 lives were lost.
In response, the UAE allocated $100 million for relief efforts and dispatched a search-and-rescue team, alongside establishing field hospitals to assist in the recovery of victims.
Furthermore, during the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, the UAE has facilitated urgent aid deliveries.
In 2024, humanitarian efforts commenced with the delivery of essential supplies to both Lebanese refugees in Syria and to displaced Syrians returning to their homeland, supported by a $100 million relief package designated for Lebanese assistance.
The UAE has also undertaken significant initiatives to support Gaza, contributing over 50% of all international relief efforts in the region.
The Operation Gallant Knight 3 program saw the UAE delivering more than 60,000 tonnes of vital aid, encompassing food, shelter, and medical supplies.
As of January of this year, humanitarian aid delivered to Gaza via land routes from the UAE totaled approximately 29,584 tonnes, targeting displaced populations in areas such as southern Gaza adjacent to Al Aqsa University in Khan Yunis.
The UAE’s response to the earthquake in Myanmar reinforces its role as a proactive leader in global humanitarian efforts, reflecting its enduring commitment to support those in crisis.
