UAE's Ongoing Humanitarian Aid Alleviates Crisis in Sudan

The UAE has provided over $3.5 billion in humanitarian aid to Sudan over the past decade, addressing the pressing needs of its people amidst a deepening humanitarian crisis.
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reaffirmed its commitment to providing humanitarian assistance aimed at alleviating the crisis faced by the Sudanese people.

From 2014 to 2024, the UAE has delivered more than $3.5 billion in humanitarian aid to Sudan, demonstrating its readiness to respond to humanitarian needs.

As one of the first countries to respond to the humanitarian situation in Sudan, the UAE has dispatched significant quantities of humanitarian aid under the guidance of its leadership, focusing on improving living conditions for both residents and internally displaced persons.

The UAE has extended various forms of humanitarian and relief assistance, particularly in food and health sectors, while also supporting the protection of women and children through the provision of livelihoods and emergency shelter.

This commitment is evident in the UAE's multifaceted approach to addressing different aspects of the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

In March, the UAE launched a significant initiative during Zayed Humanitarian Day, which facilitated regional and international efforts to provide essential humanitarian support to displaced individuals and refugees from Sudan and neighboring countries.

This initiative included organizing a high-level humanitarian visit to the Gorom refugee camp in Juba, South Sudan, in collaboration with friendly nations and representatives from international organizations.

It underscores the UAE's belief in the necessity of building a robust regional and international response to mitigate the humanitarian catastrophe affecting Sudanese citizens and coordinate efforts to alleviate their suffering.

In February, the UAE participated in a United Nations meeting to launch humanitarian response plans for Sudan.

During this pivotal moment, which coincided with the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, the UAE, along with the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and the United Nations, co-hosted a high-level humanitarian conference for the people of Sudan.

At this conference, the UAE announced an additional $200 million in humanitarian assistance, reflecting its deep-rooted values of supporting the Sudanese people amidst the escalating humanitarian crisis.

Since the onset of the crisis, the UAE has committed a total of $600.4 million to support humanitarian responses, with $200 million earmarked during the conference in Addis Ababa and $400 million provided over the past 22 months in the context of the ongoing conflict.

The UAE has pledged 70% of its $100 million commitment made in April during an international humanitarian conference on Sudan to United Nations agencies and humanitarian organizations, reinforcing its role as a key contributor to humanitarian assistance in Sudan and Africa.

This support encompasses major UN agencies, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the World Food Programme, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the Food and Agriculture Organization, and the World Health Organization.

Such cooperation aims to employ a comprehensive approach to address the humanitarian crisis and reduce famine conditions in Sudan, facilitating the delivery of various forms of aid, particularly food and health assistance while safeguarding vulnerable populations.

The UAE's humanitarian assistance not only extends to Sudan but also to neighboring countries, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to humanitarian support for the Sudanese people.

This commitment reflects the UAE's significant attention to humanitarian challenges and its dedication to continuing its assistance and support.

Since the beginning of the crisis, the UAE has established an air bridge with Sudan and neighboring Chad to facilitate the delivery of aid and mitigate the humanitarian situation faced by both Sudanese and neighboring communities.

Thousands of tons of humanitarian supplies, food aid, and medical relief have been dispatched since the inception of the crisis, facilitated through numerous air transport operations.

The UAE has also supported refugee camps for Sudanese individuals in Abéché and other regions in Chad, as well as providing food assistance to Sudanese refugees in South Sudan through the World Food Programme.

In terms of medical services for Sudanese refugees in neighboring countries, the UAE has constructed two field hospitals in Amdjarass and Abéché, which cater to all civilians regardless of nationality, age, gender, or political affiliation.

International and relief organization representatives have commended the UAE's considerable contributions to alleviating the humanitarian crisis, emphasizing its role in saving lives and providing crucial support to families and communities affected by the ongoing turmoil in Sudan.
