UK Halts Sales of Popular 'Labubu' Dolls Amidst Disturbances
Pop Mart temporarily suspends sales of 'Labubu' dolls in the UK following reports of chaos and violence among customers.
Pop Mart has announced a temporary suspension of sales for the popular 'Labubu' dolls across all its stores in the United Kingdom.
This decision follows increasing reports of disorder and violence among customers queuing to purchase the dolls.
The 'Labubu' figures are part of the 'The Monsters' series, created by artist Kasing Lung, and are inspired by the mythical 'gnomes' from Norse legends.
Known for their distinctive features, including pointed ears and a mysterious smile, the dolls have gained immense popularity among millennials and Generation Z, becoming a fashion and pop culture icon due to their unique design and the thrill of being sold in random boxes.
According to Pop Mart, the overwhelming demand for the 'Labubu' dolls has led to long queues, with thousands of customers waiting for hours outside stores.
This has resulted in significant congestion and frequent complaints from customers about the difficulties encountered in obtaining the product.
In an official statement, Pop Mart explained that it decided to temporarily suspend in-store sales as well as sales through its online shopping platforms to ensure the safety and comfort of customers and staff.
The company confirmed that online sales of 'Labubu' will continue as usual, indicating that it is working on enhancing the online shopping experience to ensure easier access and convenience for buyers.
Pop Mart emphasized the importance of customers following their official channels for updates, including release dates for new products.
In Singapore, the opening day of the 'Pop Toy Show' devolved into chaos after a limited release of 'Labubu' dolls resulted in a stampede and shouting among the crowds, prompting police intervention and the cancellation of subsequent sales.
Footage circulating on social media platforms showed moments of security breaches, with crowds rushing towards stores and confronting security personnel with angry chants.
On social media, some users criticized the organizers for poor planning and a lack of communication about sale times, while others attributed the chaos to crowd behavior, blaming individuals for ignoring instructions and engaging in dangerous stampedes.
As a result, all remaining sales planned for the second and third days of the event were canceled.
