The United States Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 55.0 kilometers, with its epicenter located at latitude 20.60° S and longitude 173.40° W. Following the seismic event, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System issued alerts indicating that dangerous tsunami waves could affect areas within a 300-kilometer radius around the epicenter along the coast of Tonga.
