The initiative aims to enhance urban mobility and offers an alternative to surface travel through advanced tunneling technology.
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and
Tesla, announced the official launch of the 'Dubai Loop' project during a session at the World Government Summit in 2025. The announcement was facilitated through a virtual conversation with Omar Sultan Al Olama, the UAE Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications.
The 'Dubai Loop' is designed to be a rapid transit system comprising underground tunnels that will connect densely populated areas of Dubai, thereby enabling seamless transportation for residents.
In his remarks, Musk drew on the experience of Las Vegas's transportation system, which utilizes tunneling technology developed by his startup, The Boring Company.
He noted that the objective is to create a network linking various locations, including major hotels and the convention center, thereby eliminating the need for air travel to access key points in the city.
Musk emphasized the practical benefits of underground tunnels in alleviating congestion in urban areas, stating, "If you live in a city with tall, three-dimensional buildings, and the roads are still two-dimensional, you will face persistent traffic problems." He argued for the necessity of adapting urban transportation to three-dimensional frameworks.
He highlighted alternatives to current transportation methods, suggesting that underground travel presents advantages over air travel, which is often noisy and prone to disruptions due to weather conditions.
Musk stated, "Underground travel does not face any of these issues, making it a safer and more sustainable option."
Additionally, Musk discussed the potential of advanced artificial intelligence and humanoid robots in transforming the economy.
He suggested that the advent of highly advanced humanoid robots would create boundless resources for products and services.
As part of
Tesla's efforts to develop next-generation humanoid robots, Musk indicated that with advanced AI capable of processing vast amounts of data, the limits of the economy could be significantly expanded.
On the role of money in the future economy, Musk remarked, "Money is essentially a very accurate database for resource allocation.
However, if resources are no longer scarce, the role of money will become unclear."
Musk also indicated that human intelligence has not significantly increased in recent decades, while machine intelligence is advancing rapidly, predicting that human cognitive abilities may become secondary to artificial intelligence.
He underscored the development of the new AI model, Grok 3, by his company xAI, which is described as significantly more advanced than its predecessor, Grok 2. Musk explained that this new model will be capable of repeatedly reviewing data for logical consistency and eliminating inaccuracies automatically.
Furthermore, Musk addressed challenges pertaining to technology in the U.S. government.
He noted that many government computers are outdated and lack the capacity to communicate effectively with each other, suggesting that technical support is essential for enhancing governmental efficiency.
He advocated for a modernization of technology to improve governmental operations.
