Manchester City Signs Dutch Midfielder Teun Koopmeiners Ahead of Club World Cup
The Premier League champions secure a five-year deal with the player from AC Milan, set to compete in the upcoming international tournament.
Manchester City, a prominent contender in the Premier League, announced on Wednesday the signing of midfielder Teun Koopmeiners from AC Milan on a five-year contract.
The Dutch international is now eligible to participate in the FIFA Club World Cup, which is scheduled to commence in mid-June.
The financial specifics of the transfer have not been publicly disclosed; however, an internal source at the club indicated that the deal cost City approximately €55 million (equivalent to $62.85 million).
In a statement, Koopmeiners expressed his enthusiasm about joining Manchester City, referring to it as one of the world's top clubs, praising its world-class players, exceptional coaching staff, and outstanding facilities.
He highlighted City's recent success under manager Pep Guardiola, stating his desire to contribute to the club's future achievements.
At 26 years of age and with 23 international caps for the Netherlands, Koopmeiners joined AC Milan in 2023, originally signing a five-year deal which was extended to 2030 in March 2024. During his tenure at Milan, he participated in 104 matches across all competitions, secured the Italian Super Cup, and was recognized as the best midfielder in Serie A last season.
Hugo Vieira, Manchester City's Director of Football, emphasized Koopmeiners's extensive experience competing at the highest levels in Europe, both in club competitions and on the international stage with the Netherlands.
Koopmeiners marks the fourth signing for Manchester City in the current transfer window, following the acquisitions of left-back Ryan Aït-Nouri, winger Ryan Cherki, and goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli.
The expanded 2024 FIFA Club World Cup will feature 32 teams and will take place from June 15 to July 13 in the United States, with a total prize pool of $1 billion.
