Russia to Enhance Relations with Syria Amid Military Presence Discussions

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced plans to enhance relations with Syria, indicating that discussions regarding the presence of Russian military forces in the country are currently underway.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Ministry, stated, 'We are committed to the continuous and active development of Russian-Syrian bilateral relations across various fields.' She emphasized that communications with the Syrian side are aimed at identifying opportunities and areas for current bilateral cooperation, noting that the presence of Russian military forces in Syria is under negotiation with the new Syrian administration.
On the previous Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke with transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara, marking their first conversation since al-Shara's inauguration.
During the discussion, President Putin reaffirmed Russia's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and expressed Russia's willingness to revisit agreements established with the former Syrian government.
In turn, al-Shara highlighted the deep strategic relations between Russia and Syria, indicating that Syria remains open to all parties in a manner that serves the interests of the Syrian people and enhances security and stability in the country.
