The Emirates Health Services Authority has clarified misconceptions surrounding schizophrenia, asserting that it is a mental disorder affecting thoughts and behaviors, which can be understood and managed.
Individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia can lead normal and stable lives when provided with appropriate treatment and support.
In an initiative to enhance community awareness regarding mental health, the authority outlined six prevalent myths related to schizophrenia, accompanied by scientific facts to address these misconceptions.
The aim is to foster a more accepting and understanding environment for individuals affected by the disorder.
The myths and corresponding facts regarding schizophrenia are as follows:
Myth: All individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia experience the same symptoms.
Fact: Symptoms vary significantly among individuals, even when the same diagnosis is applied.
Myth: Individuals with schizophrenia pose a threat to those around them.
Fact: A vast majority of individuals with schizophrenia are non-violent, especially when adhering to their treatment plans.
Fact: Many individuals live in their families and only visit healthcare providers as needed.
Myth: Individuals with schizophrenia cannot lead productive lives.
Fact: With treatment and support, they can engage in education, work, and achieve personal milestones.
Myth: The condition worsens over time.
Fact: Conversely, with appropriate care, individuals may see improvement over time.
Myth: Schizophrenia is caused solely by genetic factors.
Fact: While genetic factors play a role, environmental influences and psychological stress also contribute to its development.
Additionally, the Emirates Health Services Authority has shared four recommendations on social media for supporting individuals with schizophrenia, which include preparedness, understanding the needs of those afflicted, sharing accurate information regarding the illness, assisting in maintaining a balanced lifestyle, and encouraging adherence to treatment plans.
