A list of requirements has been delivered by the US to Syria, focusing on compliance and cooperation regarding chemical weapons and foreign fighters.
The United States has provided Syria with a list of conditions that must be fulfilled for partial relief from sanctions, as confirmed by multiple sources.
Among the stipulations is the assurance that foreigners will not hold leadership positions in the Syrian government.
The list was presented by Natasha Franceschki, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, to Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shabandi during a private meeting on the sidelines of the Syria donor conference in Brussels on March 18.
This meeting marks the first direct high-level contact between Washington and Damascus since President
Donald Trump assumed office on January 20. The discussion of these conditions has not been previously reported.
According to the US officials and a Syrian source, key requirements include the destruction of any remaining chemical weapons stockpiles and cooperation in counterterrorism efforts.
Additionally, the US has requested assurances that foreign fighters will not take on leadership roles in the Syrian administration, amid concerns raised by the appointment of some foreigners within Syria's Ministry of Defense.
Sources indicated that the US also sought the appointment of a point of contact from Syria to aid in the efforts to locate Austin Tice, an American journalist who has been missing in Syria for over ten years.
In exchange for meeting these conditions, the US is reportedly prepared to offer partial sanctions relief.
However, no specifics regarding the nature of this relief have been disclosed, nor has any timeline been established for fulfilling these demands.
As of now, both the Syrian and US State Departments have not responded to requests for comment regarding this significant diplomatic development.
