World Midwifery Day Highlights the Role of Midwives in Maternal Healthcare
The Ministry of Health emphasizes the essential role of midwives in improving maternal health outcomes.
Dr. Mohammad Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, reiterated the significance of midwives in the healthcare system, particularly in maternal care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum support, as the World Midwifery Day is observed on May 5 each year.
This global observance is aligned with national efforts to reinforce the essential role that midwives play within the healthcare system, promoting their professional development through training, skill enhancement, and improved working conditions.
These initiatives align with the country's commitment to establishing a sustainable healthcare system that meets international standards.
In his remarks on the occasion, Al Olama highlighted that skilled midwives are pivotal in reducing maternal mortality rates, owing to their exemplary performance within the integrated maternal healthcare framework.
Midwives constitute a fundamental pillar of this framework, as their collaborative efforts aim to realize the objectives outlined in the National Nursing and Midwifery Strategy launched by the government, which seeks leadership in this domain until 2026. This strategy aims to elevate professional practices and enhance the national appeal of the profession, thereby contributing to the overall health and quality of life improvements across the nation.
The ministry is dedicated to empowering midwives to thrive in the health transformation agenda.
This includes encouraging them to invest in skill development, learning, research, and innovation.
There is also a strong commitment to enhancing their involvement in shaping national health policies and contributing to achieving sustainable development goals.
