Death Toll in Gaza Conflict Surges Amid Renewed Israeli Strikes
Health ministry reports over 1,000 fatalities since resumption of airstrikes as regional tensions escalate.
The health ministry in the Gaza Strip, governed by Hamas, reported on Wednesday that the death toll in the region has reached 1,066 since Israel resumed large-scale airstrikes on March 18, 2023. The ministry noted that this includes 24 fatalities recorded within the past 24 hours.
Since the onset of the conflict on October 7, 2023, the overall death toll in Gaza has exceeded 50,423 individuals.
In a recent series of airstrikes, 41 Palestinians were reported killed as Israeli aircraft targeted various locations across Gaza early Wednesday.
According to the Palestinian news agency, attacks included bombings of a United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) clinic in the Jabalia refugee camp, which was sheltering displaced families.
This particular strike resulted in 15 fatalities, among whom were women and children, and left numerous others injured.
Additionally, Israeli artillery shelled agricultural land in the Khan Younis area, and casualties were reported after an Israeli drone strike targeted individuals in the Al-Masbah area and in Khirbat Al-Adas, near Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.
Emergency services reported recovering the bodies of at least 12 victims, also including women and children, from the rubble of damaged homes in Khan Younis.
Ongoing military operations targeted homes in the vicinity of Rafah as well.
Philippe Lazzarini, the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, expressed profound concern over Israel's military actions, asserting that the Israeli forces have repeatedly crossed established boundaries regarding the protection of civilians and UN facilities.
He highlighted that the recent strike on the clinic in Jabalia, which housed over 700 displaced individuals, demonstrates a blatant disregard for international law.
Lazzarini has called for an independent investigation into these attacks and related violations.
The Arab Parliament also condemned the recent incursion by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben Gvir into the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex, labelling it a severe violation of international law and stating that any attempts to alter the status of sacred sites in Jerusalem would be unacceptable and unlawful.
The Parliament criticized the broader military actions of the Israeli forces as a humanitarian catastrophe affecting civilians, particularly children and women, reinforcing claims of systematic deprivation and violations of human rights within the Gaza Strip.
