Dubai's Umm Suqeim Street Upgrade Nears Completion
Major infrastructure project aims to enhance connectivity for over one million residents in the emirate.
Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced that it has completed 70% of the Umm Suqeim Street Improvement Project.
This significant infrastructure development is aimed at alleviating traffic congestion, reducing travel times, and enhancing citywide connectivity across the emirate.
RTA's Director General and Chairman, Mattar Al Tayer, confirmed this progress during a recent site inspection of the project.
The upgrade spans from the junction of Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and is a critical part of the Umm Suqeim—Al Qudra corridor, which stretches approximately 16 kilometres from Jumeirah Street to Emirates Road.
The project is designed to accommodate the increasing urban footprint and population growth of Dubai, serving several rapidly developing residential and commercial areas, including Al Barsha South and Dubai Hills, all of which are home to over one million residents.
A prominent feature of the development is the construction of an 800-metre tunnel near Kings’ School in Al Barsha South.
The tunnel will feature four lanes in each direction, significantly improving traffic flow along the Umm Suqeim corridor.
Once fully operational, the upgrades are projected to enhance the street's capacity to handle 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
Travel time between Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road is expected to decrease, dropping from 9.7 minutes to approximately 3.8 minutes — a reduction of 61%.
Al Tayer remarked that this corridor represents one of RTA's most vital strategic road projects, facilitating east-west traffic alongside Dubai’s predominant north-south highways, thereby supporting the emirate’s mobility vision and long-term development goals.
The RTA is also leveraging innovative technologies to monitor the project's progress.
Drones and artificial intelligence tools are being used to oversee construction milestones and assess performance metrics, allowing for real-time decision-making and efficient site management.
This technology-driven approach has led to a 60% reduction in survey time, doubling on-ground visibility, and improving project monitoring efficiency by 40%.
The current phase builds on earlier improvements made to Umm Suqeim Street.
Phase I was completed in 2013, which included the construction of major bridges and intersection upgrades between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road.
Additional upgrades in 2020 introduced a new 500-metre, eight-lane bridge at the entry point to Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South, developed as part of the Dubai Hills Mall road network project.
As the latest enhancements are nearing completion, the Umm Suqeim corridor is positioned to significantly enhance Dubai’s road infrastructure, paving the way for smoother, safer, and faster transit for both residents and commuters.
