UAE Reaffirms Commitment to Climate Action on World Environment Day
President Sheikh Mohamed and Minister of Climate Change pledge ongoing efforts for environmental sustainability.
On World Environment Day, President Sheikh Mohamed of the United Arab Emirates articulated the country's commitment to promoting 'meaningful climate action' to safeguard the environment for future generations.
In a statement on social media, he emphasized the UAE's intention to continue collaborating with the international community to develop a sustainable vision for the future.
'Guided by a shared vision for a healthier, more resilient world, we continue to partner with the international community to drive meaningful climate action and safeguard our planet for generations to come,' Sheikh Mohamed stated.
Dr. Amna Al Dahak, the UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the foundational principles established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the nation’s Founding Father.
She remarked that Sheikh Zayed recognized the intrinsic connection between environmental health and societal well-being.
'Inspired by his vision, the UAE remains steadfast in its dedication to safeguarding our natural heritage,' she noted, presenting a future aimed at protecting both terrestrial and marine ecosystems.
In her address, Dr. Al Dahak also underscored the urgency of addressing plastic pollution, calling for individual responsibility in reducing unnecessary plastic use.
'Let us become active agents of change, leading a powerful movement towards thriving communities, and a vibrant, resilient environment,' she stated, advocating for public engagement in environmental initiatives.
World Environment Day was initiated by the United Nations in 1972, and the theme 'Only One Earth' has resonated through its observances since.
The UAE has implemented significant policies to address climate change and promote sustainability.
The Dubai-hosted Cop28 climate change summit in November 2023 resulted in the UAE Consensus, which urges a global shift from fossil fuels toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, alongside enhanced renewable energy capacity to mitigate temperature increases to 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels.
Additionally, the UAE has introduced a nationwide ban on single-use plastic bags, originally enacted in Abu Dhabi in 2022 and now extended throughout the country, resulting in the removal of around 360 million plastic bags from circulation by the end of 2024.
Large-scale environmental projects, including the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant—which aims to eliminate 22.4 million tons of carbon emissions annually—and the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, recognized as the world’s largest single-site solar park, form the backbone of the UAE’s environmental strategy.
