UAE's 'Hayat' Organ Donation Program Achieves Significant Milestone in 2024
The organ donation initiative records a 30% increase in deceased donations, facilitating over 1,000 transplant operations.
The 'Hayat' organ donation program in the United Arab Emirates has reported a significant 30% increase in deceased organ donations in 2024, compared to the previous year.
This achievement marks a notable advancement in enhancing the quality of life for patients in need of organ transplants, positioning the UAE as a regional hub for medical innovation and healthcare.
The program plays a vital role in fostering a culture of organ donation within the nation.
Sheikh Engineer Salem bin Sultan bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Civil Aviation and Chairman of Ras Al Khaimah International Airport, emphasized the critical role of the 'Hayat' program in saving the lives of patients facing severe medical conditions.
He noted that organ transplantation often represents the last therapeutic option available, providing donors an opportunity to enhance the lives of others.
Dr. Amin Al Amiri, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Regulation at the Ministry of Health and Prevention, described the 'Hayat' program as a pioneering initiative in organizing organ donation and transplantation processes.
He highlighted that the UAE's organ donation and transplantation program is the fastest growing globally over the past five years, according to classifications by international organ donation organizations.
In 2024, the rate of deceased organ donations in the UAE reached 11.6 donors per million people and included 25 heart transplants and three pancreas transplants.
Dr. Ali Al Obaidli, Chairman of the National Committee for Organ Donation and Transplantation in the UAE, noted that the culture of organ donation is rapidly increasing, with annual growth rates between 30% and 40%.
The program has gained substantial acceptance and popularity among the community.
Since its launch in 2017, the initiative began with just three donors contributing 11 organs.
By the end of 2024, the number of donors rose to 320, contributing to 1,081 organ transplant operations that benefited patients from 55 different nationalities, reinforcing the program's motto of 'from everyone to everyone.'
Furthermore, Khalid Abdullah Al Shehhi, Director of the Ministry of Health and Prevention's representative office in Ras Al Khaimah, reported that the program recorded 477 donors in September 2024 from Ras Al Khaimah alone, since the program's inception in 2021.
