Young Chess Prodigy Competes in Sharjah International Tournament

Argentine chess player Oro Fostino, dubbed 'the chess Messi,' is aiming for international titles at the event.
The eighth edition of the Sharjah International Chess Masters Tournament, organized by the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, features participation from Oro Fostino, a 12-year-old Argentine chess prodigy known as 'the chess Messi.' He is recognized as the youngest player in history to surpass a rating of 2300 points, breaking the previous record held by Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov by seven months.

Fostino aims to continue his impressive performance in the tournament, having not lost any games thus far, achieving one win and three draws.

He expressed enthusiasm about participating in the tournament for the first time, seeking to secure a new accomplishment and an international title.

He noted that his nickname, Messi, serves as a significant motivation in competitions and that he finds joy in the public's association of him with Argentine football star Lionel Messi.

Fostino also stated his commitment to training and education, mentioning that he follows football in Argentina and regards Messi as the greatest player in the nation’s history, but lacks the time to attend matches due to his rigorous training schedule.

He is scheduled to travel to Italy on June 1 for a friendly match with Viswanathan Anand, the youngest player ever to win a World Chess Championship title, during the 'Chess Routes' exhibition featuring 40 rare and original chess sets from Asia and Europe.

In the fourth round of the tournament, the standings shifted, with Dutch player Anish Giri and Serbian Alexander Indjic sharing the top position with a score of 3.5 points.

Ten players are tied in third place, each with 3 points.

Notably, UAE's Salem Abdul Rahman achieved victory over Uzbekistan's Mukhiddin Madaminov, elevating his score to 2.5 points.

The fourth round's opening saw attendance from Sheikha Ali Al Nuaimi, Chairperson of the Committee for Education, Culture, Media, and Youth at the Sharjah Consultative Council, and Imran Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the tournament organizing committee.

Sheikh Dr. Khalid bin Hamid Al Nuaimi, Chairman of the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club and President of the Arab Chess Federation, was present to follow the competition's progress.

Ahmad Mohammed Al-Madfa, Chairman of the Bridge Committee at the Chess Federation, also attended part of the event.

Engineer Talal Al Zaabi inaugurated the third tournament classification for players rated between 1900 to 1400 points.

Sheikha Ali Al Nuaimi expressed her pleasure at attending the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club and the opening of the fourth round of the tournament.

She stated that her visit aligns with field observations of cultural and sporting institutions in Sharjah, coinciding with this major global event that features elite chess players from around the world, further showcasing the club's ability to host major tournaments thanks to its organizational structure and accumulated expertise.

She expressed hopes for enhanced performance leading to medals and significant achievements for the country.
