Argentine chess player Oro Fostino, dubbed 'the chess Messi,' is aiming for international titles at the event.
The eighth edition of the Sharjah International Chess Masters Tournament, organized by the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club, features participation from Oro Fostino, a 12-year-old Argentine chess prodigy known as 'the chess Messi.' He is recognized as the youngest player in history to surpass a rating of 2300 points, breaking the previous record held by Uzbekistan's Javokhir Sindarov by seven months.
Fostino aims to continue his impressive performance in the tournament, having not lost any games thus far, achieving one win and three draws.
He expressed enthusiasm about participating in the tournament for the first time, seeking to secure a new accomplishment and an international title.
He noted that his nickname, Messi, serves as a significant motivation in competitions and that he finds joy in the public's association of him with Argentine football star Lionel Messi.
Fostino also stated his commitment to training and education, mentioning that he follows football in Argentina and regards Messi as the greatest player in the nation’s history, but lacks the time to attend matches due to his rigorous training schedule.
He is scheduled to travel to Italy on June 1 for a friendly match with Viswanathan Anand, the youngest player ever to win a World Chess Championship title, during the 'Chess Routes' exhibition featuring 40 rare and original chess sets from Asia and Europe.
In the fourth round of the tournament, the standings shifted, with Dutch player Anish Giri and Serbian Alexander Indjic sharing the top position with a score of 3.5 points.
Ten players are tied in third place, each with 3 points.
Notably, UAE's Salem Abdul Rahman achieved victory over Uzbekistan's Mukhiddin Madaminov, elevating his score to 2.5 points.
